EXCERPT

“I apologize for the delay, Abaddon.”

I turned my head to find Eran standing beside me, no more than a few inches away.

Excitement swelled inside me, so powerful I couldn’t have contained it if I’d wanted to. The nervousness now displayed on Abaddon’s face gave me even stronger encouragement.

I wanted so desperately to reach out and wrap my arms around Eran, wanted it more than anything in the world. My desperate yearning was only being held back because I still couldn’t move.

I’m not sure Eran would have allowed it anyways. He was a warrior, and he was now engaged in battle. Besides, I was nothing more to him than someone to save.

Eran didn’t look my way but kept his focus on Abaddon, who stepped back a few paces, his confidence faltering.

It was Sarai who strolled forward, self-assured, placing herself in the middle.

As she strolled by Abaddon, she mused, “Don’t worry, I believe I can handle this one.” Her face curled up into a hideous grin as she continued her approach.

I knew then what she planned…but it was too late.

“Eran, so good to see you again…” she whispered in a low drawl.

“No!” I screamed enraged, waiting for Eran to fall to the ground, whimpering with desperation as Rufus had done.

Eran remained standing.

A moment passed and Sarai’s face contorted, confusion setting in. Her state of shock became more defined, deepening further when he finally replied.

“You don’t work on me, Sarai…” I watched in disbelief as his gorgeous smirk, the one I missed so deeply, rose up. Eran turned and his stunning eyes settled on me, concentrating so intently I could not have mistaken his message. “I’m already in love.”

The world changed for me at that moment. As Eran’s confession hung in the air, I felt the passion and the power in me swell. Nothing was impossible now.

Sarai’s mouth fell open, a shaken sigh escaping. She then looked at me, her eyes narrowing in fury as Eran’s words sunk in.

Eran flippantly disregarded her, turning to address Abaddon. “You are outnumbered. You are overpowered. You have allowed yourself to be cornered. Shoddy work, Abaddon.”

As I watched their interaction, it dawned on me that Eran was enjoying this moment and that it appeared to have been long overdue. I felt a smile on my lips, nearly causing me to giggle.

It was then Abaddon released me. I fell to the ground, hitting it hard but overwhelmed with relief. I glanced up, wondering what power Eran had over Abaddon to give up his hold on me.

In an instant, I realized what had happened.

Abaddon had let me go willingly. He needed his energy – all of it – for another reason…

Leaning forward, Abaddon’s arms extended, his feet sweeping up from the ground, as he lunged for Eran.

Excerpt

“Satisfied?” Sebastian said.

“No,” she said with a frown.

He opened his mouth to protest and closed it with audible click when she got up and moved so that her body was snuggled next to his and her arms were around his shoulders.

They said nothing for the moment. Ciardis felt the slow rise and fall of Sebastian’s bare chest under her hand. She was trying to avoid touching the angry bruise he had going down his right half.

She said, “I thought you had died, Sebastian. That you had left me alone. That we would never kiss again, never speak again, never touch again.”

He shifted his head slightly underneath her chin so that his head rested on her chest. “I’m sorry.”

“Sorry for what?”

“Sorry for worrying you,” he whispered.

“You should be.”

He laughed gently.

Shifting his head, he said with hope in his voice, “Speaking of kisses…”

She swatted his shoulder. “No.”

“But—”

“No, the healer says you need to rest—”

“But I feel fine,” he whined.

“Go to sleep, Sebastian,” she whispered. “There’s much to do tomorrow.”

“Will you be here?”

“I will.”

As he drifted off she laid a chaste kiss on his hair and a single tear dropped onto his head. Gripping the Prince Heir tightly, she, too, drifted off to sleep.

When she woke it was because of noise outside of the tent.

A guard was whispering, “Prince Heir Sebastian. Lady Weathervane. The major is here to report to you.”

Ciardis shifted, preparing to rise up and tell them that the Prince Heir was still resting.

Sebastian beat her to it. “Come in.”

She still stood up. Sebastian groaned at the removal of her presence from his bed.

The major cleared his throat and entered the room.

He nodded briefly to Ciardis. “Four hours have passed, sire. It is approaching the early evening. We lost two hundred men in the skirmishes, with many more wounded.”

Sebastian nodded and with a wince sat up in the bed. Ciardis moved forward as if to stop him, and he said, “No, I need to see to the wounded, Ciardis.”

“Besides,” Sebastian said casually, “if I collapse again, at least it’ll be in the healer’s tent.”

***REVIEW***

The Greek gods never get old fashioned! On the contrary, they too are upgraded, of course your way.

I found out the book Erin Hayes thanks to another Indie-Author that for some (I add to Erin and Giselle) is favorite, Rhiannon Frater. So when I heard about this tour I decided I could not pass up. And I do not regret!

Now, we add Greek mythology , Hades and his family , We have a modern era where technology, fast food, clothing designers, one detective protagonist, a story that flows well and a very creative mind behind it.

Our result: Death is but a Dream!!

Callie Saunders a homicide detective is our girl protagonist, has to solve a case, but the downside is that it is in the Underworld, Hades wants to know who wants to kill his son Plutus, god of wealth. The reward, Callie back to life, the risk: his soul and the world.

The fluidity with which he handled the story is fun, light and with a hint of mystery, takes you by the way that the author wants to show, the characters are authentic and which are typical Greek gods have that personality with staff input seal Erin Hayes and there are many names from Greek mythology that could attract your attention. It shows that Greek mitoligia and in this case the gods can adapt very well to these current seasons.

And let's face it, most of our sexy romantic heroes are describe as the Greek gods as perfect money, fancy clothes and other monads. Who says that real Greek gods can not enjoy those details?

The story is spiced with romance, so, this small but powerful touch will make the history of unexpected changes. Including the end of the story. Take note and go looking for it on your Goodreads to read or Amazon.

I think you may have noticed that I am really excited with the underworld, the changes and the gods. And a funny thing happened to me, perhaps a sign of the Underworld that this was the right place to read the book, I was sitting,I sipping a glass of soda and I enjoying my fries with ketchup and a little chipotle sauce when I read this:

"...The McDonald's next to us was a 24-hour one with the dining area open at all times.

We were the only ones there at that time of night, so I quickly ordered two Big Mac combos for Plutus and I..."

I stared at my Big Mac and then around maybe Plutus and Callie were there., it was a fun experience.

I loved reading it, I enjoy it and I would like the author give us more to read of this kind of story, a continuation or with a new story.

My stars review: 4.5

I received an E-book arc in exchange for an honest review.

Though Cammie’s friends warn her against Hunter, she can’t resist his charms; especially not when he buys her shoes. And GoodReads. And a unicorn. But when her handsome best friend, medieval reenactor Archer Riddick, makes a play for her heart—and challenges Hunter to a jousting match—it turns out that Hunter has demons of his own. Demons that aren’t real ones, but metaphorical ones—which are MUCH WORSE, when you think about it…

Join Hunter and Cammie on an emotionally exhausting journey into love.

And co-dependence.

And probably therapy.

Excerpt from Stim, Chapter 4

There is a well-known equation, known as the Drake Equation, that is used to estimate the number of detectable, sentient, communicative races in the galaxy (besides us, if we consider ourselves as one of them). It works (or does not work, according to its critics) by guessing the value of a lot of variables, such as the fraction of stars which have planets, and the fraction of planets which develop intelligent life, amongst other things, and multiplying them all together. Depending on the values chosen, the equation produces a number between zero (we are alone in our galaxy) to billions (we have lots of intelligent neighbours in the galaxy).

I decided to modify this equation to estimate the number of potential girlfriends for me in Christchurch. Here is my Girlfriend Equation, for a Scientifically Calculated Reckoning of Eligible Women (or SCREW score):

G = P . fw . fa . fi . fs . fp . fr . fh . fg

where

G = the number of potential girlfriends for me in Christchurch;

P = the population of Christchurch, which is about 400,000 (I am not interested in a long-distance relationship, so I am restricting this variable to my home city);

fw = the fraction of the population made up of women, which is about 50% (I am not interested in a gay relationship, so I will calculate for females only);

fa = the fraction of the above women within one year either side of my own age, so aged about 18-20, which I estimate at about 5% (I do not want to date a schoolgirl, and women aged 21 or over will surely be too sophisticated for me);

fi = the fraction of the above women who are highly intelligent, say with an IQ within the top 5%, which is (obviously) a certain 5% (because we must be able to talk to each other at approximately the same level);

fs = the fraction of the above women who are currently single, which I…um…guess is about 50% (I do not want to date someone already dating someone else, as I do not want to get involved in threesomes or a trinogamous relationship);

fp = the fraction of the above women who I find physically attractive, which is…er…about 10%, at a guess. I do not know exactly (I think physical attractiveness is probably quite important for the sex aspect of the relationship);

fr = the fraction of the above women who reciprocally find me physically attractive, which is even more difficult to estimate…so about 20%, at a guess (yes, this is double the percentage I estimated I find attractive, but I am not unhandsome, you know);

fh = the fraction of the above women who I will like hanging out with, which I estimate at 100% (I am sure I would like hanging out with an attractive woman, and I am quite easy-going);

fg = the fraction of the above women who will get along with me and tolerate my Aspie ways… Hmm, hard to estimate… I will be generous and guess 20% (most women are likely to consider me too weird to go out with, as Chloe told me).

Treating all of the above as independent variables, which is maybe a little questionable as some of them are probably correlated, I plugged all of the values into the equation, which became:

G = 400000 x 0.5 x 0.05 x 0.05 x 0.5 x 0.1 x 0.2 x 1.0 x 0.2

Multiplying everything together, this equation of somewhat dubious credibility results in:

G = 1

That is it. I have calculated there is one unattached, intelligent woman of about my age in Christchurch who I will find physically attractive and who will find me physically attractive, and enjoy hanging out with. One.

Why negative reviews aren't bad

Let's face it. Every author gets mixed reviews, even (and perhaps especially) the top bestsellers.

Just like we're not all attracted to the same kind of people, we don't all like the same kind of books.

Most readers know this. And a negative review, if constructively written, can help them decide to buy your book, because whatever the reviewer didn't like might be exactly what the next reader does like in a book. The only negative reviews that don't help are one like 'This book sucks' that tell you nothing about it.

Of course, every author likes to get lots of good reviews and 4 or 5-star ratings, but even those can be misleading. It's said that reviewers on Goodreads are harsher than those on Amazon, for instance. Individually, some people might give very few books a 5-star rating, but others might give every book they like a 5-star rating. It's hard to compare.

Even the overall rating can be misleading as to how good a book is going to be for you individually. Here's why. Imagine two books: the first is a well-written, but run-of-the-mill, novel that nearly everyone likes, with mostly 4-star ratings and a few 3-star and 5-star ratings to give a 4.0 rating overall. The other book is different, and half of the readers don't 'get' it and don't like it (and give it a 2-star rating), and the other half really love it and give it a 5-star rating. The overall rating for the second book would be 3.5, well below the first book, even though half of the people who read it gave it 5 stars, and half of new readers would like it at least as much as the first book. In this case, it comes down to a choice between a book you'll probably like and a book you'll either love or hate.

What is probably more important in choosing a book is the ratio of 5-star ratings to the total, or whether people who appear to like the same kind of books as you liked it or not.

Publication date: November 13th 2013
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Take a journey into the gritty world of political espionage through the eyes – and lies – of one extraordinary girl. A wholly original tale of friendship and betrayal from the author of The Jane Austen Academy series….

Sasha has a secret – that she can make you spill your secret with nothing more than a question. Her strange gift makes her a burden to her foster family and a total freak of nature. Not that Sasha cares. Why should she when no one cares about her?

Then the CIA knocks on her door. They want to give Sasha a new identity and drop her into a foreign country to infiltrate a ring of zealous graffiti terrorists. They want to give Sasha something to care about.

To survive a world where no one is who they seem, Sasha needs to make people trust her. But when that trust blossoms into love, Sasha is forced to decide between duty and friendship, between her mind and her heart, and whether to tell the truth or keep her secrets.

Meetings

After a lifetime in orphanages, research labs and assignment to the FBI, Sasha has been transferred overseas. She's alone and just off the plane…

Zaventem National Airport, Brussels, Belgium

I'm herded through a swinging door into a crowded pickup zone. Waiting families shuffle back and forth, vying for a glimpse of us past the barrier. Every searching gaze brushes over me, as dismissive as the disembodied female voice whispering from above.

Please report any suspicious activity to the nearest airport official.

S'il vous plaît signaler toute activité suspecte à la fonctionnaire le plus proche.

Meld verdachte activiteiten aan de politie.

First time out of the country. Don't know a soul. Working for the CIA, surrounded by all this foreignness—and not just the languages. What have I gotten myself into?

The surge of bodies at my back carries me toward the open lobby. Chelsea had said he would find me, but as I keep walking I'm struck with this vision of running outside to the street. Not stopping until I'm swallowed by the city. No job, no ties. I whip my head back and forth, hoping for something familiar, and I find it in the crowd of eager faces—my name, written in black marker on a piece of cardboard.

Holding the sign is Porter Jennings, fresh from Clark Kent's Smallville: salt-and-pepper hair, weathered skin, and a blue and white checkered shirt. He looks so normal that my relief at not being abandoned at the airport is tempered by a flare of disappointment. No James Bond tuxedo for this Company NOC.

At second glance, I concede he's clever. He's been assigned to Brussels for over a decade but hasn't shed his Midwestern vibe. A perfect anti-spy disguise. No one would pick him out of a lineup unless it was for a tractor driver. I'd packed and unpacked my pinstriped suits a half-dozen times before finally leaving them hanging in the closet. The decision that had at first felt petty now feels smart.

Porter spots me, folds the sign into halves, and shoves it in his back pocket. As I approach, he grabs my hand for a vigorous shake but never breaks stride, forcing me to keep up.

"Welcome aboard, Sasha."

"I'm glad to be here, sir." Simple. To the point. Pretty close to what I'd practiced on the plane.

"Quick, quick. I'm hoping we can make it home for dinner." He makes for the automatic glass doors, leaving me to break into a jog, canvas bag and all. What kind of spy cares about being home for dinner, I don't know. Maybe he's not very good at his job after all. Maybe that's why he needs a teen misfit to do his dirty work.

Comic 2

Sasha loves to draw and she expresses a lot of her feelings about her life through comics. Each chapter begins with a comic book page – Sasha's interpretation of her birth to childhood to life with the FBI.

AUTHOR

cecilia-bio

Cecilia Gray lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where she reads, writes and breaks for food. She also pens her biographies in the third person. Like this. As if to trick you into thinking someone else wrote it because she is important. Alas, this is not the case.

Cecilia has been praised for “instilling a warmth and weight into her characters” (Romancing The Book Reviews) and her books have been praised for being “well-written, original, realistic and witty” (Quills & Zebras Reviews).

Her latest series of young-adult contemporary Jane Austen retellings was named a What’s Hot pick (RT Book Reviews magazine) and is a Best of 2012 pick (Kirkus Reviews) where it was praised for being a “unique twist on a classic” and offering “a compelling mix of action, drama and love.”

She’s rather enamored of being contacted by readers and hopes you’ll oblige.
